Work-study students: managing and financing the dual life of a work-study student

Two homes, two rents, the same energy for your studies and your job? Welcome to the life of a work-study student: two addresses, one work-study program, one landlord or owner per home, expenses that pile up… but also concrete assistance to lower the monthly amount 💸.

Submit your application to the CAF (APL/ALS/ALF) via the simulator, add Mobili-Jeune, Visale and Avance Loca-Pass, check if your company provides assistance for dual residence, and reduce the cost by renting a furnished room or sharing an apartment.

This article explains where to access the websites and platforms, what conditions entitle you to each allowance/benefit (sometimes not combinable), what documents to include in your file, what dates and durations to expect, what to try again in case of refusal, and how to build a clean, clear, useful budget, whether you are in Paris or another city. ⚡️

Double housing: what it means and what to expect

Having a home close to work and keeping your student residence near school is convenient for work and training, but it puts a strain on your finances. Depending on your family situation (living with a parent, as a couple, or alone), the CAF (family allowance fund) may take into account your resources, your professional training or apprenticeship contract, the length of your lease (furnished or unfurnished), and the type of accommodation (studio, room, social housing, private student residence) when calculating your benefits.

Advantages/disadvantages of dual housing

Advantages (social ties, time, success) Disadvantages (cost, management, mobility)
Reduces daily commute time, more energy for work and training Double rent to pay, multiplied utilities and security deposit
Better quality of life and housing, work/study balance Coordination of addresses, landlord and owner, two leases to keep track of
More social connections locally, quick access to opportunities Travel and potential moving costs, monthly and weekly organization

APL, ALS, ALF: personal housing assistance from the CAF

This financial assistance is paid monthly in the form of an allowance. Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for one of these (not several at the same time for the same accommodation).

Assistance Who is eligible Type of housing Amount/calculation Procedures & deadlines
APL (Personalized housing assistance) Tenants of subsidized housing Social or subsidized, sometimes in a residence Calculated based on income, rent amount, address, number of occupants Apply for housing assistance on the CAF website, first payment after review, variable allocation deadlines
ALS (Social Housing Allowance) When APL is not available Most private rentals, furnished or unfurnished Amount estimated using the simulator on the website Application and proof of employment/studies, tracked on your CAF account
ALF (Family Housing Allowance) With family responsibilities Various types of housing Depends on family situation and resources Online application, specific eligibility requirements

Clear tip: run a simulation on the CAF website to estimate the price remaining after the allowance. Student housing assistance can be paid directly to the landlord or into your account. Be aware of the conditions for combining benefits if you occupy two apartments: the CAF considers one entitlement per main residence, and certain types of assistance cannot be combined for two residences at the same time.

These services can be requested on the dedicated platform; follow the steps on the page for each public service or Action Logement, then you will receive a response and, if accepted, the assistance will be paid according to the allocation deadlines.

Useful note: some pages refer to “housing assistance,” “dual residence assistance,” or “personal housing assistance.” Carefully read the eligibility requirements, the type of assistance, the duration, whether it can be combined with other assistance, and the conditions for repayment, if applicable.

Dual residence assistance: how to go about it in practical terms

There are two main options depending on your situation. First, some companies or collective agreements provide for a dual residence allowance to compensate for a new residence related to work. Check with your HR department: your work-study program may entitle you to this. Second, from a tax perspective, dual residence expenses (rent at the place of employment, meals, travel) can be declared as actual expenses if you maintain a primary residence elsewhere for serious reasons. The deductible amount depends on prices and your situation; keep all supporting documents and check the official clauses before reapplying.

A quick note about “site access”: if you try to access the CAF or Action Logement website using an anonymous network (anonymous or proxy), you may see error messages such as “malicious behavior previously detected from the network” or “activity and behavior on this site have led us to restrict access.” In this case, avoid hidden connections, return via a standard access point, disable and try again. This is often enough to unblock the site and access it safely.

Reduce costs and manage your budget on a daily basis 📅

Practical solutions when you have to manage double rent

You can rent a smaller, more convenient place, such as a furnished room near your workplace, while keeping your studio near your school. Sharing a place or alternating between two places with a roommate who has a similar schedule can reduce costs and allow you to share expenses. Occasional subletting is sometimes possible with the landlord’s consent and depending on the lease; check the written terms and conditions. Student residences and halls of residence offer short-term stays, sometimes with weekly payments. There are also Action Logement mobility solutions for new jobs, and simulation services to give you an idea of the remaining costs.

Consider the time saved and the overall price: commute, city, workplace, internship, school year. Calculate your budget per month and per share of expenses. If you rent furnished accommodation, the charges may be included, which counts in the final calculation. Keep an eye on the deadlines for allocating assistance and the date of the first payment to anticipate your cash flow.

Mini budget simulator (to be completed)

You can use this as a home tool. Fill in the values to calculate your dual residence budget.

Remaining amount to pay/month€630
Tip: enter “0” if not applicable. Adjust after your official simulation.

Simple example: if you have €430 + €520 in rent, €220 in APL paid, €100 in Mobili-Jeune, and €90 in transportation, your remaining balance would be 430 + 520 + 90 − 220 − 100 = €720. This is an indicative simulation: adapt it according to your situation and the assistance you receive.
